Born in Kilgore, Texas, Seth Thomas is in his third year of playing for the Centenary Gent’s basketball team. Swayed by the short distance from home, impressive basketball coaching, and academic accomplishments by the college, Seth settled down at Centenary with great confidence that he would be successful.

“It’s really all about family,” Thomas says, emphasizing the support system that he has back home with his family. His sisters, one older and one younger, are also in school for dentistry and cosmetology. His mother, who has been his biggest influence and support in his life, pushed Seth to begin his career in basketball at an early age. “My mom coached me all through little league.”

College basketball has been a different environment from Thomas’s childhood playing with the pace and intensity of competitiveness becoming more serious. Regardless of the challenge, Thomas enjoys playing here at Centenary. With the support of his teammates and the ability to form such tight-knit relationships, he has been able to maintain a fulfilling career in college basketball.

Balancing college with athletics has always been hard, and Thomas learned quickly that his academics were just as valuable as his sport. “Trial and error,” he says has been a key component in guiding him to better manage and balance his life as a student-athlete. During the season, Thomas has a strict schedule: wake up, eat breakfast, go to class, and go to practices throughout the day. Life is a bit more relaxed during the off-season; he has free time to relax and unwind from the countless hours devoted to playing.

Thomas has had several great experiences playing over the past three years here at Centenary. He has made it a habit to remain positive and hopeful, making every moment a learning experience, saying: “I wouldn’t say there’s a disappointing part.” Struggling with being hard on himself as well as having a challenging coach has aided Thomas in developing great ways to keep moving forward.
