Cheer and Dance at Games
As we all may know already, Centenary sports are underway. Currently, our active sports are cross country, golf, soccer, and women’s volleyball. If you’ve been to any soccer or volleyball games, in particular, you may have noticed the presence of the cheer and dance teams. The teams attend three sports games throughout their seasons: both attend men/women’s soccer and men/women’s basketball. However, the third sport is different, where cheer goes to women’s volleyball, and dance goes to lacrosse. The cheer team cheers and stunts throughout the soccer and volleyball games, and the dance team serves as the halftime performance at the soccer games.
Following is a quote from the cheer and dance coach, Coach Kaylee King: “It is an exciting time for Centenary cheer and dance. Both teams have stepped up their presence at athletic events and truly stepped into the role of being supporters of our athletic programs. It has also been a time for the teams to showcase the skills they have been working on, not only for the sidelines but for competition as well. Both teams use the fall semester and fall games to prepare themselves for the competition and the national’s stage by performing competition-level skills.
Along with being on the sidelines, both teams will compete at three competitions this fall and will compete in three more this spring. For the cheer team, each sport in which they are cheering is unique in the skills they can perform. Depending on the ground’s surface, only certain skills are permitted, which is why the crowd sees different skills at each game. Dance has only been performing at the halftime of soccer right now, but when basketball season kicks off, they will not only perform a halftime routine but will also showcase their sideline dances during the games as well. I am excited to see the continued growth of both teams as they continue to push themselves both in practice and at games. We enjoy supporting our fellow Centenary teams and helping bring a level of excitement and support to the competitive arena. “We look forward to continuing it into the rest of the year.”
