Athlete Spotlight

Jackson “Jack” Lacour is a first-year cheerleader from New Orleans, Louisiana. On top of being a competitive student-athlete, Jack is double-majoring in communications and studio art; his passions include exploring new places, spending time with his friends, and developing his artistic career as an artist. In his free time, Jack likes to visit Rhino Coffee, study in the SUB, and of course, work on painting and developing his brand.

Jack spent the majority of his secondary school career doing both recreationally and competitive cheer, but it was during his senior year at West Jefferson High School that he was attracted to Centenary for its inclusive campus and impressive art department.

“I really feel like I can grow here,” he said about Centenary, and Jack has! After adapting to the rigorous expectations of college, Jack made both Centenary and Shreveport a home away from home. Before considering an art career, Jack considered careers in dentistry and biology, but his life was turned around, and he landed at Centenary to pursue his true passion: art.

Jack has made his mark as an artist back home in New Orleans. His family has always been actively involved in visual arts, which is the main reason why he began to brand himself at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Free time from being in quarantine allowed Jack to create many paintings, and soon he was selling his pieces at pop-ups around New Orleans.“I hustle all over the streets. I sell art out of my car!”

His drive has paid off, with his art being featured in coffee, clothing, and skate shops from New Orleans to New York. “COVID definitely was a blessing in disguise.”

The person who really influenced Jack's application to Centenary was the College's former cheer coach, who direct-messaged him about joining the cheer team for the incoming school year. “I was like, this is what I need.”

He gravitated towards the idea of doing college cheer, and from then he was set on Centenary. Getting to know the team has been an extraordinary opportunity for Jack. The bonds created and the tight-knit community made by being on the spirit team are what have allowed him to flourish in many ways on and off-campus.

Centenary’s Spirit Teams comprise both the cheer and pom teams. Along with being a competitive group, they make appearances at athletic events, games, campus convocations, and more. You can find out more about the cheer and pom teams at: https://www.gocentenary.com/landing/index.
