Swimming’s SCAC Championship Recap

With Centenary’s 2022-2023 swimming season all wrapped up, we eager fans can look back at their accomplishments throughout the period. One of these was their time at the SCAC Swimming and Diving 2023 Championship. This was a 4-day event that featured 7 colleges. The Ladies and Gents are joined by Austin College, Colorado College, McMurry University, University of the Ozarks, Southwestern University and Trinity.

Wednesday's schedule featured the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Free Relay. The competition resumed on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. with the prelims of the 200 Free Relay followed by the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free. The finals of those for events were held at 6 p.m. Friday's schedule began with prelims at 10:30 a.m. for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back. After a break, the 400 Medley Relay occurred followed by men's and women's diving competitions. A special recognition of all the senior student-athletes was set for 5:45 p.m. on Friday followed by evening finals. Saturday's action began at 10:30 a.m. and was followed by the finals at 6 p.m.

At the end of day 1 on Wednesday, Centenary swimming teams each sit in seventh place. The Ladies earned 52 points while the Gents tallied 32. Trinity is the leader on both the men's (112) and women's (116) side.

The Ladies and Gents each placed seventh in the championship finals of the 200 Medley Relay and the Ladies' foursome also placed seventh in the finals of the 800 Free Relay. Sophomore Madeline Vacula teamed with senior Bryn Jenkins, senior Christine Goodman, and junior Anacelia Galeano Balam to swim the 200 medley in a time of 2:00.19.

The Gents' team of Junior Aiden Peterkin, Junior Antonio Barbee, freshman Jameson Feeney, and Sophomore Nathaniel Batiste Jr. finished the 200 in a time of 1:50.05. Vacula, Jenkins, Galeano Balam, and senior Camryn Hebert swam the 800 free in a time of 8:42.77.

For day 2 of the competition, Sophomore Madeline Vacula highlighted Thursday's action for the Centenary swimming teams as she finished fifth in the championship final of the 500-yard Freestyle. Vacula swam a season and career-best time of 5:14.27 and also teamed with Jenkins, Goodman, senior Katie Malicoat to place seventh in the championship final of the 200 Free relay in a time of 1:47.59.

The Ladies and Gents were each seventh after two days of competition with 97 and 42 points respectively.

The teams were each in seventh place after the third day. The Ladies collected 141 total points while the Gents had 62. Trinity remained the leader on both the men and women teams. 

At the end of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, the Centenary swimming teams recorded 7th place finishes. The Ladies earned 221 total points while the Gents tallied 73. Trinity won both the men's and women's titles. Madeline Vacula won the 1650 free in a personal-best time of 17:55.66 to highlight Saturday's action for the Maroon and White.
