The Spirit Teams Start Their Competition Season

With the end of soccer and volleyball season, many Centenary students have started preparing for basketball season. While these players are attending Maroon Madness and donning their jerseys, two Centenary teams are preparing for a different season entirely.

The Centenary dance and cheer teams, known collectively as the spirit teams, have spent their Fall season performing on the field and court for soccer and volleyball, but in practice, they have been diligently preparing for their competition season. The spirit teams have the duty of providing entertainment and support for the school’s athletics. While these dancers and cheerleaders adore this job, many forget that their official roles are as competitive cheer and dance squads, meaning their Winter and Spring will be filled with various virtual and in-person competitions, as well as performing at the many men’s and women’s basketball games.

The spirit teams have already begun sending in performances for virtual competitions. Early in October, the dance team competed in the American Dance/Drill Team’s Virtual Halftime Showcase. If you have been to the soccer games, you would have seen the hip-hop dance that the Leading Ladies competed with. They received their results last Thursday, winning the highest ranking of D1 and the Judges’ Choice Award in hip-hop. Congratulations, ladies!

Most recently, both the cheer and dance teams submitted performances for the AmeriDance Virtual Competition late in October. The teams will receive their individual results later in the month of November. Both teams will compete in their first in-person competition for the Worldwide Spirit Association on November 12th right here in Shreveport. The teams will continue competing both virtually and in-person for the next several months in between hosting clinics, attending campus events, and performing at games. In late February, both teams plan to attend their national competition in Anaheim, California. At nationals, the teams will be competing with several routines both together and separately against colleges from around the country. All of their prior performances and judges’ critiques will be used to prepare them for this exciting endeavor. They will surely be working tirelessly to be successful. We wish them luck!

To keep up with the cheer and dance team competitions, follow them on Instagram at @centenarycheer and @centenarydance or attend basketball games to watch them live.
