Let’s Talk About Dragon Books
If you’ve interacted with me in the past couple of weeks, there is a very high chance that you have heard me talking about dragons. I recently read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros which is a new adult book set in a war college for dragon riders, and ever since then, I have been mildly obsessed with dragons. Fourth Wing is seriously one of the best books that I have read in a long time. It was written in a really compelling way. The characters were interesting, and so many of the scenes were the kind of thrilling that makes you feel like you are simultaneously watching the most intense thriller movie and fast-paced game of your life. I don’t want to give too much away because I think it is better to go into Fourth Wing with as few spoilers as possible.
In addition to reading Fourth Wing, I have also read The Aurelian Cycle trilogy by Rosaria Munda which is not as popular as Fourth Wing, but it is excellently written. The first book of the trilogy is Fireborne. The Aurelian Cycle follows Lee and Annie, two teenagers who grew up as orphans together and are now competing to be two of the top dragon riders in their world. One of my favorite things about The Aurelian Cycle is the way Munda writes about politics. Most of the fantasy books that I have read take a lot of the nuance out of politics, but Munda shows the intricacies and complications. Another interesting thing about Munda’s series is the fact that it was Plato’s Republic.
Needless to say, I have been reading a lot about and thinking even more about dragons lately. They breathe fire, they can fly, and in certain worlds, they can even communicate with their riders. What more do I need to say? They sound like the absolute best things ever.
Yarros and Munda portray dragons in slightly different ways, and although the dragons are still very cool in Munda’s trilogy, I like the dragons’ characteristics in Fourth Wing just a little bit more which is nice because the highly anticipated sequel to Fourth Wing actually comes out this upcoming Tuesday! There is even a midnight release party at 2nd & Charles!
