Project Runway: Season Twelve
Recently, I’ve been watching old seasons of Project Runway on Hulu, and the last season I watched was season twelve: the most dramatic season of Project Runway I have ever watched. For context, I used to be an avid viewer of the show, but after Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum left, it kind of lost its charm and I lost a lot of interest.
However, season twelve was absolutely iconic, and I hate the fact that I didn’t watch it live because I am desperate to talk to people about it. Fortunately for you, I’m going to write about nine fabulous moments from the season. This article will contain spoilers, so proceed at your own risk.
1. New Things!
Two of my favorite things about Project Runway were introduced this season: the Tim Gunn save and the anonymous runway. Because Gunn gets to talk to the designers more and see more of their work ethic and personality, I really think his opinions about the designers are important, and I like that the save gives him more agency.
I love the anonymous runway because I think it helps remove biases. It shows who is actually a strong designer with a clear point of view because those designers make clothing that is clearly made by them.
2. The Unconventional Challenges
I felt like there were a lot of unconventional challenges this season: the first episode, the third episode, the fifth episode, and the one outfit in their collection if they went to Fashion Week. As surprised as I was by the amount of these, I love unconventional challenges because they push designers to make surprisingly beautiful clothing. If I had to choose a favorite unconventional piece for this season, it would definitely be Justin’s test tube dress.
3. Sandro
If Sandro had chosen to stay, I think he could have gone on a lot longer in the competition. His designs seemed really interesting; he just had a slight problem controlling his emotions around everyone. He did a lot of shocking things, such as pulling one of the behind the scene workers of the show into the workroom, talking on the runway despite the fact that has was literally safe, and smashing a camera.
4. Miranda and Timothy
Miranda and Timothy’s relationship was so odd to me. Miranda complained about Timothy from the beginning, but I kind of liked Timothy and his fun personality. I really only saw the side of Timothy that Miranda talked about after she publicly insulted him.
5. Ken and Alexander
I have seen the clip of Alexander and Ken’s little fiasco several times, either online or on newer episodes of Project Runway, so I was really surprised when I got to see the original episode this season.
6. Glamping
I loved this episode. I understand that it’s a competition at the end of the day, but I really enjoy watching the designers get close to one another and actually become friends as the season goes on. This episode gave them a chance to breathe and bond with one another. I really appreciated it.
7. The Modern Southern Woman
When the designers had to design for the “modern Southern woman,” I wasn’t expecting so many of them to be confused about who that particular client was. It’s almost as if most of them thought Southern meant an 1800s farmer. I think I would have liked this episode more if there were two guest judges who were actually from the South.
8. The SuperFans
I loved watching the fans in episode eight. They were all so excited, and it was contagious. I wish this was a consistent challenge in Project Runway.
9. Kate Being Sent Home
Kate consistently created good designs, and I loved that she pushed herself out of her comfort zone to create more interesting pieces. The judges also seemed to love her. I was so surprised when they decided to send her home.
Overall, this season was a rollercoaster of drama, but it was a really good season. I am currently rewatching season thirteen, and I highly recommend the seasons of Project Runway on Hulu if you’ve never watched the show before.
