Ranking the Movies that I Watched in December 2023

This was a much harder list to put together than for November. I rewatched a couple of movies that I love, and I’m still unpacking how I feel about certain movies. If you enjoy reading my rambly mini-movie reviews, then you should definitely follow my Letterboxd account (@jordanofong). Without further ado, here is my ranked list of movies that I watched in December of 2023!

1. Ice Princess

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I feel like no one ever talks about it. It has a stellar cast featuring Hayden Panettiere, Kim Cattrall, and Joan Cusack. It’s about a woman in STEM who is also a talented figure skater. This movie excels at passing the Bechdel Test, and it has an amazing soundtrack. What more could you ask for? If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and go watch it on Disney+ immediately.

2. How to Train Your Dragon

As we all know, I have recently developed a slight obsession with dragons due to Fourth Wing, and How to Train Your Dragon has become a perfect movie in my mind because of it.

3. Godzilla Minus One

I haven’t actually watched an entire Godzilla movie before this, but I have seen clips of the other movies. Based on my limited knowledge of Godzilla, I didn’t have particularly high expectations for this movie. I didn’t think it would be bad, but I just wasn’t that interested in the premise.

I was pleasantly surprised by Godzilla Minus One. It was devastatingly perfect, and I cried quite a lot during it. This movie was definitely so much more than just a monster movie, and I’m glad that I ended up watching it.

4. Saltburn

I actually watched Saltburn twice this month, and I still don’t know how to feel about it. After I watched it the first time, I thought it was a good movie, but I just wasn’t sure if it was a movie that was made perfectly for me. After rewatching it and watching a decent amount of videos analyzing the movie, I’m starting to think that Emerald Fennell is a genius. Every shot and every moment was done with such thoughtfulness.

I also just really love a movie that creates a conversation. I know a lot of people are talking about those particular scenes, and as shocking as they are, I don’t think they are the best parts of the movie. I think it’s everything else about the movie: the lighting, the cinematography, the soundtrack, and even the less talked about plot points.

As for why I can’t really decide if it’s one of my favorite movies, usually I just know when a movie is a favorite. I don’t have to think about it, but Saltburn has been living in my head since I watched it. I think that has to warrant some points. Also, every analysis video that I watch just increases my respect and admiration for the cast and crew.

5. Tangled

It’s a Disney Princess movie, so, of course, I loved this rewatch.

6. Eileen

Eileen was an interesting watch, and it’s one of those movies that I’m glad I saw in the theater. If you didn’t get a chance to watch it in theaters, I would highly recommend watching it with friends.

7. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

I watched The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes in November, and then I reread all of the books and rewatched all of the original movies this month. I loved immersing myself in the story again.

As for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, this felt like a better movie compared to the first movie and a stronger plot compared to the Mockingjay movies.

8. How to Train Your Dragon 2

The sequel was just not as strong as the first movie, but I still enjoyed seeing all of the new kinds of dragons.

9. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2

I watched Part 1 and Part 2 back to back, and their plots bled together. I do like the action scenes in Part 2 more, so it’s ranked just slightly higher than Part 1.

10. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

I was completely expecting this movie to feel incomplete since they decided to split the final book in half for the movie adaptation, but I ended up feeling like both movies tell their own satisfying stories without being completely dependent on one another.

11. The Hunger Games

I honestly think I would have enjoyed this much more if the camera wasn’t so shaky during the fight scenes. It was really distracting and annoying.

12. Migration

This is a cute movie, but it is a little forgettable at the end of the day.
