Silence of the Lambs: a Different

Silence of the Lambs is one of the best movies of all time. This film is thrilling, suspenseful, and just incredible. Just in the beginning, the first scene shows the eeriness of the film, with the main character, Clarice, completing the FBI’s obstacle course through the fog and woods. This scene shows Clarice’s incredible strength and this trait of her is shown throughout the entire movie. She is so strong physically and mentally. Clarice, a young FBI student, is searching for the notorious serial killer known as “Buffalo Bill,” who has just kidnapped his last victim, Catherine Martin. Buffalo Bill is known for skinning the women that he kills. Her mentor, Jack Crawford, needs her to help with this case and try to get some answers out of Dr. Lecter. She seeks help from a famously known psychiatrist, now convict, “Hannibal the Cannibal.” He uses his wit to help the young Clarice catch Bill and save Catherine from her fatal fate if she were to be stuck in that well for just a few more hours. Just when you think that the film could not take another twist or turn, Hannibal manages to escape from prison, killing, or shall I say eating, many people along the way. The young Clarice finds and kills Bill after a long, thrilling, and nail-biting scene in Bill’s basement. Clarice and Bill played a long game of cat and mouse in his basement and the chilling scene ends with a gunshot. The acting, the tension, the plot, and the settings of this film are just impeccable. This film could never be remade and could never even be compared to the thrill that one gets from watching this movie. Jodie Foster plays Clarice and this, in my opinion, is one of her best acting performances. She helps show how being a woman in the FBI at this time still came with struggles. One of my favorite scenes, she walks into an elevator full of men and it’s Clarice on her way to one of the greatest cases ever. When Clarice and Jack go to see the body of his first victim, Jack implies that she is being discriminated against because she is a woman. No one believed that Clarice, as a small female, could not handle this case. She is surrounded by a group of men; she is the only woman in the room for the investigation. She ends up kicking all of the men out of the room, and Jack is quite impressed. This helps show Jack that she has what it takes to be an FBI agent and that she is not going to let anything stand in her way. Anthony Hopkins plays Hannibal the Cannibal, and he is an unforgettable character. One of the creepiest scenes for me was when Clarice cut her leg and Hannibal could smell her bloody skin even through the cell glass door. The tension between Clarice and Hannibal is so strong and yet a little unsettling at times. The relationship between the two of them is shown to be a good friendship, when Lecter escapes. Clarice’s safety is a concern, but she explains that she is safe because she says, “He would consider that to be rude.” There is an understanding of courtesy and respect between these two. They have a bond that could never be broken. I would not consider this film to be a horror film seeing as the film does not include an incredible amount of blood or gore. This film is based on psychological thrillers and therefore can be enjoyed by those that love suspense just as I do. I highly recommend this film to anyone, seeing it as it is an impeccable film that keeps the audience on their toes.
