The Winter Blues

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it's perfectly normal to feel glum. With finals and all sorts of deadlines approaching, it's hard not to feel at least a little bit overwhelmed. If you're feeling down this season, you might just have a case of the Winter Blues.

So how are you supposed to stay sane? There are no quick and easy fixes; emotions can help be managed by regular use of coping mechanisms and taking care of oneself. No matter how busy you get, schedule time for yourself. Write in a journal, play a video game or sport with your friends, do yoga. Anything you enjoy would be a great thing to schedule between your exams. Make sure you get enough sleep still, the temptation of pulling an all-nighter may be extra compelling, but your brain cannot function to its full capacity without being well-rested.

Remember that it's okay to ask for help. Human beings are social creatures, and we aren't meant to fight all of our battles by ourselves. After all, we're all going through life for the first time ever. Don't be unkind to yourself for having bumps in the road. You wouldn't expect a child to be born knowing to read or ride a bike, so you shouldn't expect yourself to know exactly how to do things that you've never done before.

On our campus, we're lucky enough to have counseling services as well as services through Timely Care. Going to therapy or counseling isn't just for people with mental illnesses, there's nothing wrong with going for those reasons, but just as one goes to a doctor for their physical body (even if just for a checkup), one should also go to a therapist for their mental health and wellbeing.

So, even if the Winter Blues have got you down, hopefully some of this can perk you up!
