Sunday, September 24th was pretty eventful for both Taylor Swift fans and football fans for the same reason. There’s a sentence I never thought I’d write. There had been rumors swirling around Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift possibly being together for a few days and many people–like myself–were wondering if they were a joke or not. Travis Kelce’s brother was on a radio show saying they were 100% true and then a few days later he came out saying that was a joke people weren’t supposed to take seriously, and everyone was just very confused. Well, no one had to wonder anymore on that Sunday afternoon because Taylor Swift was present at Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Chicago Bears sitting right next to Travis’s mother. That sounds like a confirmation of something to me.

As a Taylor Swift fan and a football fan, I never thought my worlds would be colliding in this way, but I love it and I’m here for it. For those of you who don’t know football, Travis Kelce is a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. If you don’t know who Taylor Swift is, you live under a rock, but she’s a 12-time Grammy Award Winning artist who has released 10 albums since 2006. Back to Travis Kelce, he’s been playing for the Chiefs for more than a decade and he’s won two Superbowls with them. He and his brother Jason, who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, actually played against each other in the Superbowl earlier this year which was a big story in the sports world. He is a bit of a public figure outside of just playing football. He’s used his name recognition to have other deals made like being on a reality TV show called “Catching Kelce” that aired in 2016. He also started a podcast called “New Heights” with his brother last year where they mostly talk football and other sports, but many other topics have been covered over the weekly episodes as well. Topics such as Kelce attending the Eras Tour in July when Taylor Swift had dates in Kansas City at Arrowhead.

It was then that the seed was planted for the idea of Swift and Kelce being an item because Kelce recounted the story of him bringing a friendship bracelet to the concert with his number on it so he could give it to Swift. He was not able to, however, so no one expected anything to come of it other than it being a cute story told on his podcast with his brother. Until a couple of months later when they were reportedly seeing each other and then a week later she’s watching him score a touchdown and chest bumping a friend in excitement. Taylor Swift fans and football fans were both losing their minds a little bit. The NFL changed their TikTok bio to say “9/24/23. Taylor was here,” and the post game interviews for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid included questions about the new couple. Mahome’s response to being asked if he knew Swift would be in attendance for that day’s game was that he’d been told by Travis that she was coming in such a nonchalant way that he actually didn’t believe him until their game. Someone asked Coach Reid if he’d gotten the chance to meet Swift and he said he’d met her before and “I set them up, and I’ll just leave you with that.” I don’t think they’re used to talking about pop stars during post-game interviews, but they seemed to be good sports about it and just as interested as many people were.

Speaking of interests, many Swifties were losing their minds because they often lose their minds when it comes to Taylor Swift, but mainly because Travis Kelce is an American. This is her first American boyfriend (or whatever you want to call it) since she dated Conor Kennedy in 2012, so a pretty long time. Many people on Twitter were joking how this was the Swiftie version of the American Revolution. The Swifties love to find “easter eggs” where there may or may not be any, so they were analyzing everything from the game. They said what Travis wore to the game– a white and blue outfit– was some subtle 1989 (Taylor’s Version) promo, and they pointed out how Kansas City won by 31 points which is 13 backwards and 13 is her lucky number. I think some of the excitement is also because this is a potential romance with someone who they feel they can actually be excited about. I’m looking at you, Matty Healy. I certainly appreciate her being with Kelce over someone like Healy. But anyway, I wish Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce the best, and hopefully they can continue to deliver us fantastic moments in pop culture.
