BSU Family Reunion: Second Annual

April 9, 2022 was a day full of sunny skies, an ever-present breeze, and BSU’s Family Reunion. Centenary’s Black Student Union (BSU) are known for offering a welcoming invite for a range of events to the whole student body—the invitation for their Family Reunion. With this being the second year that the event occurred, having a great turnout, this event was highly anticipated.

Students were able to enjoy a variety of delicious food: wings, fried catfish and shrimp, ribs, jambalaya, mac n cheese, and veggie penne pasta (just to name a few dishes). There were also desserts available (like peach cobbler, honey bun cake, and banana pudding) and were just as tasty. Even with just the food, clear weather, and great company, everyone in attendance was in fantastic mood.
As the event continued, members of BSU started to start the numerous games and activities they had scheduled. DJ K-West kicked things off with some music and quickly had “Cupid Shuffle” playing across Jones-Rice Field. As more songs were played, more fun activities were being set up. There was a water balloon toss (which felt nice with the sun beaming straight down on everyone), a kickball game, and a sack race with both causing some friendly, yet very fierce, competition. As the event started to wind down, those that came and participated left with full stomach, smiling faces, and fond memories of the past few hours.

Centenary Black Student Union creates a safe space that gives a voice to the different perspectives of the Black community. They present a culture of excellence that is empowered through personal, cultural knowledge and experience. They speak for diversity and do so in a way that is firm, polite, and respectful. BSU welcomes any student who is willing to learn their view on everyday issues they face. They love spreading more awareness and building a stronger sense of community—not just among BSU members but also with the Centenary community. Their Family Reunion event is a fantastic representation of who they are as an organization. By hosting an event and having be one that centers on many people coming together and enjoying themselves and others, they have established a further sense of community among those that attended. This is shown even further with them having the event being called a “Family Reunion;” there’s no glossing over what this event is meant to represent.
Overall, I believe that not only was the Family Reunion a fun occasion, but it was a needed one as well. Anytime we students gather for anything close to personal, it creates a tie between us and the others there. And what better way to enjoy the day than with friends, delicious food, and games? Even with it having just happened yesterday, I am already eagerly looking forward to the invitation for next year…
