A Closer Look at Centenary Appreciation Week

As we finally start to warm up and get attacked by the pollen outside, spring is finally here with one more month left in the semester. And with the spring comes the biggest week of the semester — that isn’t called finals week. We all know it, we all love it: it’s Centenary Appreciation Week! And with this week comes lots of free food, free stuff, and many fun activities from almost every big organization on campus — from SGA to CAB, BSU, Greek life, admissions, and more.

Monday started the week off with coffee and donuts for students. Students were able to get a bit of caffeine and something sweet to start their week off right! Tuesday night, DPS and Sodexo workers came out and hooked us up with some burgers, hotdogs, mac-n-cheese, and more. Thursday, we had Chalk the Walk, where free sweatshirts (yes, free) were available to those who chose to write or draw out the reason they love Centenary. And the week is featuring a packed Friday evening! CABchella AND the Cajun Boil are happening on the same night! If you ask me, there's no better way to end the week than hanging with friends and eating crawfish while watching some live music.

But try to save some room in your stomach for Saturday, when the Black Student Union hosts its second annual Family Reunion; I saw the menu, and trust me, you want to be there. And the week officially closes off Saturday night with the return of BSU's Apollo Fest Talent Show. In conclusion, you're going to want to show up because there's going to be a lot of free stuff, and who doesn't like free stuff? But why do we even have this whole week to begin?

Before all the fancy fanfare that we have now, the primary reason for Centenary Appreciation Week was a way for the school to come together to show our appreciation for one another. After a long year — and in our case, a long two years — the dedicated week acts as a way to slow down for a bit from all the ripping and running that comes with college life. The week gives us students an opportunity to just sit back and appreciate everything and everyone that the school has to offer. Despite it now being the giant multi-organization (expensive!) event that it is today, Centenary Appreciation Week still holds true to its core idea: taking the time to appreciate not just the school, but the people that make this College what it is today.

I'm a sophomore born and raised right here in Shreveport! Along with being a Biology and Neuroscience double major, I'm in SGA, Student Ambassadors, BSU, and Chemistry Club. When I actually do have free time, I like to hop on the PlayStation, scroll endlessly on TikTok, or—my favorite pastime—rant to one of my friends about some random football topic.
