Welcome to Camp: Spring Fling 2022

One of Centenary’s most anticipated events during the school year is Spring Fling, a week full of activities and events put on by the Centenary Activities Board (CAB). Spring Fling 2022 was held during the week of March 14-18 and had the chosen theme of “Camp Catahoula.” Callie Fedd, CAB president, shared information on the workings of this event, and mentioned that the idea behind this year’s theme came from another member board.

“It all started when I decided I wanted another dog…(I’m joking!) Actually, one of our General Board members this year had a lot to do with the theme. Because of their work with the Girl Scouts of America, the topic of ‘summer camp’ has come up a lot this year, and it all just kind of fell into place from there.”

With a theme in place, CAB members are then tasked with planning activities that tie in with the overall camp idea. With an event such as this, there are some events that are a staple, such as the T-shirt giveaway that usually begins the week and are a given to include. However, having the same activities be repeated year after year can get boring, so having to think of new things is also a given. No matter new or done before, the process of planning these events is a tedious one.

“Planning activities is NOT easy. It takes a lot of time, prep work, and an insane amount of organization. What’s even harder is putting on activities and events that look effortless. CAB’s lucky to have had an amazing Vice President of Festival Weeks this year, Kierston McPherson, who put the entire week together with the help of some very dedicated General Board members. Those guys had meetings like every day for two weeks before the actual week of activities—they generated ideas for activities, handled prep work, and worked in shifts during the events themselves.”

Looking at the events that were included in the Spring Fling ’22 lineup, McPherson and the other General Board members clearly delivered on an exceptional week. The activities listed not only varied from previous years and from each other, but they also tied into the camp theme. The staple T-shirt giveaway was named “Welcome to Camp Catahoula,” and there was also “Capturing Camp,” an event that had disposable cameras for use and students were able to scrapbook. There was also “Catahoula Champions” with painting, a bonfire, and doughnuts for the student body to enjoy.

The most popular event, though, seemed to be “Crafts and Cacti.” Those that went were able to make friendship bracelets and grab a succulent. This event was not just a student favorite but also personal favorite of Fedd’s as well.

“It completely shocked me! I know a few people were worried while we were planning about how niche the event seemed, but there was a surprising turnout!! Some people came just to get a ‘cacti’ (succulent) but a lot of people actually stayed and made bracelets with their friends. I even found myself making a few!”

With such a fun week, it is easy to overlook those that were involved in the whole process. CAB strives to deliver an enjoyable experience for students, down to the smallest detail. While students don’t see the tiresome planning that goes into making these events look seamless, and CAB works hard to make that happen, it is important to recognize the great work they do. This goes beyond Spring Fling; CAB manages to plan and put on various events throughout the school year and each one is a fantastic experience. CAB, along with the organizations they partner with, truly help make great moments among the overwhelmingness of the school year.

Even with Spring Fling ’22 being done, there are already students anticipating the next event CAB is known for: CABchella—which takes place this year on April 8th. Look forward to hearing all about the event in an upcoming issue!
