The Best—and Worst—of Centenary’s Desserts

As the owners of an anonymous Instagram account that ranks Centenary College’s desserts, we have the privilege of asking the question “What are the best and worst desserts?” Although our identities are unknown, we’re very giving people and more than willing to consult our highly exclusive board of dessert judges to get the facts to you, the people.

So, without further ado, these are the top three and bottom three dessert options that Centenary College of Louisiana’s cafeteria offers.

The Best:

3. Lemon Blueberry Cake

Ranking: 9/10

This is just a pleasant slice of cake. It’s soft, not too dry, and an excellent balance of tangy and sweet. The blueberry isn’t overwhelming at all. The glaze on the outside only adds to the merits of this already strong treat.

2. Blueberry Cheesecake

Ranking: 15/16

If you consider yourself a fan of blueberries, this is the dessert for you. Personally, we are not blueberry people, but even we couldn’t deny the allure of this cake. Cheesecake is just undeniably great, and the texture and crust on this one is perfect (a rarity among cafeteria desserts). Not to mention the portions are huge.

1. Cream Cheese Brownie

Ranking: 40/40

The absolute king of cafeteria desserts. It’s undeniable. We here at Cent Desserts have ranked it twice and both times it’s elicited a perfect score. The cream cheese swirl perfectly balances the chewy chocolate brownie. We can’t help but pick one (or two… or four…) up every time they’re available.

Honorable Mention:

Peanut Butter Cake

Ranking: 13/16

Now, don’t get us wrong, there are certainly better desserts than this that have gone unmentioned. But there is one simple reason for this: the peanut butter cake is dependable. Just about every dessert in Centenary’s cafeteria is wildly inconsistent, some days tasting great, and others tasting absolutely awful, except for this one. Every time we grab a slice of peanut butter cake, we know what we’re in for: a not-too-dry, just-a-little-sticky cake that tastes, well, like peanut butter.

The Worst:

3. Chocolate Sand Pie

Ranking: 7/20

The filling on this one was just fine, but its biggest problem lies in the name; it has the texture of sand. I don’t know if this was a one-time mistake, but the crust was just not set. It was impossible to eat with a fork, as it just crumbled all over the plate, and the texture was insufferable.

2. So-Called Iced Yellow Cake

Ranking: -69/420

An infamous dessert, best explained by our guest reviewer’s colorful description: “This so-called iced yellow cake has a taste that is so indecipherable it sent me into a state of partial paralysis… There seems to be some type of cheesecake-esque swirl throughout the cake which was not very well received by my taste buds. A dessert that, in concept, should be relatively simple and easy to execute, has once again been bogged down by the Caf’s need for uniqueness and ingenuity.”

1. Jello with Whipped Cream

Ranking: 1/60

They really just don’t go together, no matter how much the cafeteria keeps trying to make it happen. This dessert is out there SO often, too, for no discernable reason. The worst part, easily, is just how often this dessert is set out. And it’s always pretty much untouched! Big Jello has taken over Centenary’s cafeteria, and we, for one, reject it.

We hope that you’ve enjoyed this foray into Centenary’s food scene. If you agree with any of these choices, drop @centdesserts a follow on Instagram and let us know. If you disagree, don’t tell us; we don’t care. You can still follow, though, if you want.
