Alyssa Davis Returning Hot after being Nominated for SCAC WOTY
On July 6th, Alyssa Davis was able to add another achievement to her already impressive resume after the SCAC nominated her for Woman of the Year, an award that has never been won by a Centenary student since the award was established in 2005. Davis was nominated alongside six other women from Austin College, Colorado College, Southwestern University, University of St. Thomas, and Texas Lutheran University. It is interesting to note that Davis is the only athlete nominated who participated in two unrelated sports; she was on Centenary’s tennis team before it was dissolved. This award is given to a “senior female student-athlete who has best distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence and service, and leadership,” as per the SCAC’s announcement, which is certainly shown in Alyssa’s college resume.
Alyssa Davis arrived at Centenary in the fall of 2018 from Leonard High School in Leonard, Texas, where she excelled at both her academics and athletics, competing in tennis, basketball, and, of course, volleyball. During her tenure on the volleyball team at Centenary, Davis racked up 1,082 kills, 783 dibs, and also assisted 77 blocks. She is second all-time in program history in kills which she achieved this past fall on October 1st in a big conference win over Schreiner.
Not only has Davis dominated the volleyball court, but she has also shown how she’s much more than just an athlete at Centenary. To list a few of her off the court accomplishments, Alyssa Davis has been named to the Dean’s List from 2019-2022, has been a part of two different honors fraternities at Centenary, and has recently been hired at Centenary as the Assistant of Alumni and Family Reunions.
Since no Centenary student has won the award, it would be a monumental achievement for Alyssa, who has already left her mark on Centenary in various ways.
Davis expressed what getting nominated for the award meant to her, “This past year with my surgeries and being out so [much] this year was tough mentally and physically. I was upset I couldn't get the records I wanted, so when I got nominated for this award it meant so much to me because this year was so hard. It made me feel seen and thankful that I was able to get that award.”
Thankfully the former team MVP of the volleyball team has decided to return for a 5th season as she is currently pursuing her MBA. The experience and leadership Davis is bringing back to the table will bode well for the team’s future as thirteen of the team’s twenty-one members are underclassmen, allowing Davis to lead this team to success and set them up to succeed after she graduates. Here’s what Davis told me when I asked what we can expect from her this season, “I honestly don’t know. I'm going to be a different player. I’m coming for revenge. I’m determined. I’m coming for those records. Your senior year you have a hunger which I didn't really have last year, so now that I know it’s my last year, I’ll be hungry. I am determined to get to the top.”
