Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers” – Easter Eggs and Rumors

As a personal mega-fan of Miley Cyrus, I was elated to find a notification announcing the imminent release of “Flowers,” the first single from Cyrus’ upcoming eighth album, Endless Summer Vacation. The song’s upbeat melody differs from her previous album, Plastic Hearts (2020), which took on a punk-rock vibe. However, the style is not unfamiliar to fans of her middle albums. The song has earned the record for the most streamed song on Spotify for seven consecutive days, reaching 96 million streams the week after its release. The song has rocketed to international attention due to speculation over Cyrus’ meaning behind the lyrics and music video.

Centenary’s Backyard: Lake Claiborne State Park

Welcome back to a new semester and a new calendar year! To ring in the first issue of 2023, I am rolling out the first article for a Louisiana State Park. Lake Claiborne State Park is a park in the state's Northwest region that offers much of the recreation one might think of when they think of the “Sportsman’s Paradise.” For those not from Louisiana, the northern part of the state is home to the terrain that is great for activities like hunting, boating, and fishing which are all “Sportsman’s” activities. Over break, I paid this park a visit with one of our copy editors, Jordan Fong, so that I could make an informed review. Now, let’s get into it!

The Winter Blues

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it's perfectly normal to feel glum. With finals and all sorts of deadlines approaching, it's hard not to feel at least a little bit overwhelmed. If you're feeling down this season, you might just have a case of the Winter Blues.

Centenary’s Backyard: Eddie D. Jones Park

Today’s installment of everyone’s favorite series for the Conglomerate comes as a suggestion from Dr. Hansen. If you do not know the lovely Dr. Hansen, she teaches BIO 101, Ecology, and Conservation among other great classes for our Biology department. She has previously done research on different ecological topics, one of which is chimpanzees. The reason she recommended Eddie D. Jones Park is because it is the site of Chimp Haven which is a 200-acre chimpanzee sanctuary run by the Chimp Haven, Inc. non-profit. Eddie D. Jones Park is also the site for an 82-acre Veterans Cemetery. It’s a bit further of a drive than other parks in Caddo Parish, but there are lots of things that make this park special, so let’s get into it.

Celebrating Holidays on the Red

It is the most wonderful time of year in Shreveport, and Holidays on the Red, hosted by the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau, is a fantastic way to get into the holiday spirit. The campaign was created by the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau (SBCTB) to bring more exposure to the numerous existing and new events taking place this year. These events, starting just after Thanksgiving and ending right before Christmas, are amazing opportunities to explore the community as well as check off some boxes on the holiday shopping list.

Magale Hauntings

Though the frightful night of Halloween has passed us, we still have one more location at Centenary to discuss, and it’s the hauntings at Magale Library. If you’ve studied there late at night, you’ve likely felt an eerie feeling, especially on the second floor. Maybe you’ve felt a chill, or even that someone watching you. Or perhaps you’re one of the few people who’s actually seen the ghost on the second floor, the ghost of a little girl wandering the rows of books.

The Sub, the home of Centenary’s newspaper now online, does have some creepy aspects to it- the third floor at night definitely gives one the spooks, as does the basement, with its dim, fluorescent lighting that might flicker at the most unnerving times. But the Sub does not have ghosts in it, despite all this… but it does have two people within it who are intimately familiar with the ghosts at Centenary, ones that you’re more likely to encounter if you live on campus: the Dorm hauntings.

Centenary’s Backyard: Columbia Park

Welcome back to everyone’s favorite series from the Conglomerate! This issue I wanted to highlight a hidden gem: Columbia Park. This park is even closer to campus than Betty Virginia. But its location is more embedded in its neighborhood than Betty Virginia, so it’s easier to miss. Though this park is small, there are still many parts that make it a lovely pocket of land inside the chaos of the City of Shreveport. Let’s get into the review!
