Centenary Football is on the Horizon
Starting August 19th, Centenary’s football team will be playing for the first time since 1966. The team recently moved on campus and has started preparing for the upcoming season. I got the opportunity to talk to two members of the team: Braedon Board and Joshua Brown.
Braedon Board is a senior majoring in business administration, and he is a wide receiver. Board has played football in the past but decided to switch from football to basketball in high school and has played basketball here at Centenary for the past three years. When I asked him what made him decide to go back to football, he said, “For me, personally, I wouldn’t be able to sit down and watch it happen in front of me. I wanted to be a part of it.” After college, Board would like to go pro, and after going pro, either go into something like real estate or owning a truck business.
Joshua Brown is a freshman majoring in political science, and he is a quarterback. Brown has been playing football for about twelve years. When I asked him how the transition from high school football to college football has been so far, he said that it has been smooth, and so far, the biggest difference is that everybody on the team was the best on their high school team.
When asked about their goals for the season, both Brown and Board emphasized that the team is trying to develop a strong foundation right now. It seems like the coaches are trying to establish a team with this foundation both on and off the field. Brown said that the coaches are teaching the team about life and that Coach Dawson wants to make them the best men possible, not just the best football players. Board said that the coaches are very motivational and genuinely care about members of the team.
As an upperclassman on the team, I asked Board to share some advice for his freshmen teammates. He responded: “Stay motivated. Stay positive. Centenary is what you make of it.” He really stressed the importance of making friends, saying that making friends from all over the campus helped him feel more comfortable. I can’t agree more. Centenary really is what you make of it, and the community that the students have here is one of the best.
If you would like to support Brown, Board, and the rest of the football team, Brown and Board both agreed that the best way other students can support the team is by coming to the games! You can find the schedule at this link: https://gocentenary.com/sports/fball/2023-24/schedule
