Cheer and Dance on Hot Streak in competitions

Our cheer and dance teams have been performing incredibly well throughout their fall competitions, earning first place in every competition they’ve entered. Most recently, the teams competed in the Cheer America and Freedom Dance Competition at the NRG Center in Houston, Texas. This marks the first time the two teams competed together, and during the performance, they showcased a sideline cheer, a fight song, and a traditional band chant. The performance scored a zero, the best possible score, winning both teams another consecutive competition.

Before the two teams joined forces to win another consecutive competition, the leading ladies started their competition season strong by receiving the highest placement in the American Dance/Drill Team Halftime virtual showcase. The Leading Ladies were ranked in Division 1 out of four possible divisions and received the judge's award in hip-hop. This strong start helped the ladies pave the way for them to go on to win their next two competitions. They placed first at American Allstar Competiton and the AmeriDance Virtual Game Day competition.

So far, the cheer team has experienced the same success as their dancing counterpart. First, they scored an impressive zero at the American Allstar Competition, meaning the judges made no deductions during the team's stunt routine. Then after placing first in that competition, they went on to place first at the AmeriCheer Virtual Gameday Competition, where the team received high praise from the judges yet again.

The cheer and dance teams at Centenary were only brought to campus two years ago, and the programs are already seeing consistent success. In an interview with senior dance member Alaina Owens, she had this to say about the team's journey to their recent success,

“It’s been a ride having to rebuild this program and set and accomplish new goals. But we are all in a mutual understanding that we need to always hold each other accountable and continue to work hard because we all want the same things.”

Kaylee King coaches both teams, and she’s doing a great job during her first year here at Centenary. Prior to her time at Centenary, Coach King was the head cheer coach at Angelo State University since 2017. Coach King was also a cheerleader for two years at Michigan State University, with more than a decade of choreography experience.

The next time the Leading Ladies will compete will be Saturday, December 10th, in the Midwestern Cheer & Dance Cowboy Christmas Classic Competition held in Monroe, Louisiana. This will also be the next competition that our cheer team competes at as well. To stay up to date with our Leading Ladies’ and cheer squad's success, check out the pages on GoCentenary.com!
