Halloween for the Introverts
Since Halloween is right around the corner (somehow) I think we need to get our plans together. If you are like me, you are not a barhopping, late-night partyer that plans on taking advantage of those kinds of festivities. Or if you want a cozy night in before the real fun begins then you are going to need the essentials: candles, candies, fall themed blanket, and most importantly, Halloween movies. Now there are two different directions to go in if you are planning to binge-watch movies all night. You can go scary, the most common considering Halloween is about dressing up in costumes and masks to scare other people. You can go classic or, as I call it, childhood favorites that are for those of us that do not enjoy almost spilling our drink all over ourselves from just one jump scare. Since there are so many movies out there in this genre I am going to list about five to ten in each category and give you my top three favorites.
Starting with scary, horror movies. This is one of my favorite genres of movies regardless of what time of year it is. I believe any horror movie is perfect to watch on Halloween but let’s stick to the theme of Halloween. Here are some of top rated horror movies to watch this Halloween:
1. Halloween (1978)
2. Beetlejuice (1988)
3. Trick r’ Treat (2007)
4. Scream (1996)
5. The Terrifier (2016)
6. The Shining (1980)
7. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
8. Friday the 13th (1980)
9. The Sixth Sense (1999)
10. Get Out (2017)
These movies were rated some of the top horror movies to watch this Halloween. As you can see from the list, I personally favor some of the classic horror, Halloween movies. There is just something about them that new Halloween movies could never quite recreate. It is clear from the typical costumes being Ghostface, Michael Myers, Freddy, and so on that these “old movies” never lost their certain brand of scary, even as CGI got better and better. If I had to pick two movies from the list to add to my quo this Halloween, I would probably go with Halloween and The Terrifier. I still get nightmares about Michael Myers and his creepy mask. The Terrifier is a great movie to watch if you enjoy gorey, gross scenes of villains doing unspeakable things to their victims. After you finish these horrible, disturbing films I suggest taking a walk down memory lane with some feel-good films from our childhood.
My favorite thing to do with my friends and family on Halloween is watch the classics that I enjoyed so much as a kid. Even though I am a horror movie fan, I could spend the whole night watching nothing but heartwarming movies on the couch in my obnoxiously festive blanket and candy while there are cookies baking in the oven and a pumpkin spice candle being burned on the side table. Here are some of the best feel-good Halloween movies that just get better with time!
1. Corpse Bride (2005)
2. Hocus Pocus (1993)
3. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)
4. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
5. Coraline (2009)
6. Ghostbusters (1984)
7. Halloweentown (1998)
8. The Addams Family (1991)
9. Hubie Halloween (2020)
10. ParaNorman (2012)
These are just some of the best “older” movies there are to watch on Halloween night. I could plan my whole day around sitting on the couch all cozy to watch these movies. I think my top picks from this list have to be Halloweentown and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. I have not seen either of these movies in years but they used to be my absolute favorites growing up. I think I would have a Halloweentown marathon and watch all three of the movies back to back to back. The Charlie Brown movies are forever classics and I think they need no explanation as to why you should watch them this Halloween and every one after. Halloween may be a holiday about scaring people and getting candy but do not be scared to stay indoors with your family and friends and have a movie marathon of whatever you desire. If you want to know where all of these movies, and more, are streaming go to Goodhousekeeping.com and it will give you a synopsis of your favorite movies as well as what streaming service it is available on. Happy Halloween everyone!
