Golf Conference Tournament 2023

Our Centenary men's and women's golf team traveled to Kerrville, Texas, to represent us in the SCAC Conference Tournament. The players that qualified were freshmen Kaylee Roberts, Hahn Bridges, Jeff Borchert, sophomore Tyler Jones, juniors Richard Blair and Andrew Bennett, and senior Devan Martin. In this tournament, the men's team played thirty-six holes on the first day and eighteen on the second, while the women’s team played eighteen both days. To make sure there were no surprises when they started, our gents and ladies left Centenary on Saturday so they could spend all day Sunday getting acquainted with the course. This helps all golfers prepare better for the twists and turns that might pop up during their rounds. After their practice round on Sunday, each official round started bright and early on Monday morning. The men played two rounds on the first day and one on the second, while the women played one round each day. On the women’s side, Kaylee Roberts shot a 109 on the first day and a 108 on the second. It was not her best of the season, but she had this to say about the conference and her first year playing collegiate golf, “Coming into Centenary, I knew that my game would improve, but I had not realized the amount of connections I would make. I was super excited to have a team full of girls, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out in my favor for this season. I competed in many tournaments solely representing the Centenary Women’s Golf team, and at times, it was a bit overwhelming. It felt as if there was a huge weight over my shoulders. Our coach, Emelyn Aubrey, however, always gave me the encouragement I needed. With that, I was able to improve my score by around 20 strokes from the fall season. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity, and I’m excited to see what’s in store for next year”.

On the men’s side, finishing “on par” means you have completed your 18 rounds at exactly 72 strokes, while anything over or under this is plus or minus the amount away from 72. The goal is to get as low as possible, so you want to be below par. Andrew finished his first round with +5, the second round +3, and the last round -2. Jeff finished his rounds with +4, +8, and +3. Devan finished with +7, +21, and +13. Tyler shot +16, +13, and +12. Ricky finished with +18, +15, and +12. And finally, Hahn finished +16, +22, and +16. Andrew “Drew” tied for seventh place in this year's conference tournament. A statement from Drew about his performance: “I couldn’t be more happy with the way I performed this semester. Thanks to my teammates' support and Coach Aubrey’s help, I was able to put up some solid golf. Going into the conference, I just wanted to end the season with another good finish. I believe I achieved that and am excited for what next year brings”. This year’s golf team was relatively young and will only get stronger in the future. With any prospective golfers on the horizon, we are all excited to see what next year brings!
