Metamorphoses Review
This fall semester the Centenary Theatre Program put on Metamorphoses with director Jared Watson. Metamorphoses is a play by Mary Zimmerman based on the early narrative poem of the same name written by Ovid. The play takes the shape of a series of short scenes related to each other initially through the fact that they are Greek and Roman myths and slowly leading to an ultimate intertwining of previous threads.
The Conglomerate’s Guide to Fall
There is a, sort of, chill in the air, the sun is setting earlier and earlier, and a pumpkin spice latte is permanently in my hand; this can only mean one thing, it is fall y’all. With temperatures finally below sweltering, Fall is the perfect time in Louisiana to get out and enjoy all that our city has to offer. Here is everything you need to know to enjoy this season:
What to do if you feel that you’re falling behind
Having the feeling of falling behind in class can be an overwhelming and intimidating experience, but it is not the end of the world, even if it feels like it is. In this article, we will look at some practical and strategic solutions to help you get back on track with your studies . . .
Halloween for the Introverts
Since Halloween is right around the corner (somehow) I think we need to get our plans together. If you are like me, you are not a barhopping, late-night partyer that plans on taking advantage of those kinds of festivities. Or if you want a cozy night in before the real fun begins then you are going to need the essentials: candles, candies, fall themed blanket, and most importantly, Halloween movies . . .
Halloween Safety Tips With DPS
Having fun on Halloween can take a couple of different forms for the college student, but no matter what you’re doing it’s important to be safe. We reached out to DPS for their insight on what will keep your evening from becoming a real life horror show.
What’s On at the Robinson - October 2024
Our favorite local movie theatre is always showing new or interesting shows, and as a reminder, you can go for free with your student ID! But what’s even on these days?
College Declassified: Study Skills from the LC
At this point in the semester you might be starting to notice that the study habits you carried over from high school might not be as effective as they once were. This could be signified by a decrease in the grades you once had, finding yourself not knowing where to even start studying, or a general feeling of being overwhelmed. If this is you, then I implore you to keep reading . . .
Letter from the Editor: An argument for student journalism
The oldest (maybe) question that college students ask themselves is “Why should I get involved anyway?” It is so easy for us in our first years of college to succumb to the allure of a little extra free time, a few more hours of sleep, or the peace and quiet of staying in our dorms. Meetings, practices, assignments, and responsibilities all haunt the average college student’s day to day and it can be hard to keep all of these things afloat while also expressing yourself, exploring your passions, and advocating for causes you care about. To this, dear reader, I have a solution: student journalism . . .
Investigating Pop Culture: Summer 2024 Highlights
As a person who does not bother to keep up with trending topics and is now in charge of the Life and Times section of our campus newspaper, I know that I need to spend some time conducting research in order to live up to the role. That being said, for this first article, a highlight reel of pop culture in the summer of 2024, I can safely assume that whatever did make it onto my radar was the trendiest of trends. I’ll be covering May to August, based on category and not month, some of the biggest moments of pop culture this summer.
Editorial Board’s Guide to Shreveport- Free, Fun, Favorites
Whether you have just moved to the great city of Shreveport or you have lived here your whole life, you may not know about all of the exciting (or at least cheap) hidden gems this town has to offer. Luckily for you, The Conglomerate has compiled this list of free, fun, and our favorite local offerings.
Presidential Primaries in Full Swing
It’s election year in the United States, and the fight for control of our highest office have begun in earnest. The Democratic and Republican parties have begun their primary elections to elect the candidate that will go to the general election. Tensions are high as the top candidates, Joe Biden (D) and Donald Trump (R), raise questions about stability, qualification, and legitimacy.
Best Rom-Com Movies
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, it starts to feel like there are only two types of people in this world. There are the picture-perfect couples that gear up for date night and chocolate-covered strawberries, and then there are their painfully single counterparts who insist the right person just hasn’t come along yet. Personally, I fall into the second category and always end up pulling out my pink pajamas and watching rom-coms with a bowl of popcorn and a side of unrealistic expectations. Whether you are painfully single or hot-date-ready, there is something comforting about the predictability of a good rom-com.
Ranking the Movies that I Watched in December 2023
This was a much harder list to put together than for November. I rewatched a couple of movies that I love, and I’m still unpacking how I feel about certain movies. If you enjoy reading my rambly mini-movie reviews, then you should definitely follow my Letterboxd account (@jordanofong). Without further ado, here is my ranked list of movies that I watched in December of 2023 . . .
From the Archives: The Nanny Diaries promises uncertain college students life after graduation
The Nanny Diaries was a satisfying film experience. Based on the novel by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus, The Nanny Diaries introduces a college graduate in Business, Annie, who does not know what she wants to do with her life. She becomes lost, to say the least, and takes on a nanny job, at first, as a mistake, but then finds herself . . .
Ranking the Movies that I Watched in November 2023
1. The Social Network
This is one of my all-time favorite movies, so it is not surprising that this is my favorite movie of the month. I’ve watched it so many times that I have certain lines memorized, but it never fails to entertain me. It is beautifully edited, and the cast is so talented. The Social Network is currently on Netflix. But it never stays for too long, so I would watch it now while you still can . . .
Let’s Talk About Dragon Books
If you’ve interacted with me in the past couple of weeks, there is a very high chance that you have heard me talking about dragons. I recently read Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros which is a new adult book set in a war college for dragon riders, and ever since then, I have been mildly obsessed with dragons.
Silence of the Lambs: a Different
Silence of the Lambs is one of the best movies of all time. This film is thrilling, suspenseful, and just incredible. Just in the beginning, the first scene shows the eeriness of the film, with the main character, Clarice, completing the FBI’s obstacle course through the fog and woods. This scene shows Clarice’s incredible strength and this trait of her is shown throughout the entire movie
Best Halloween Movies for This Fall
It is officially spooky season, and with that in mind, there’s no better time of year to cozy up with a blanket and a hot drink and watch a movie (unless you’re in Shreveport, in which case, you’ll probably cozy up with a fan on the highest setting and a nice cold drink until this awful heatwave passes). So, let’s talk about some of the best movies to watch as we get closer to Halloween . . .
